Pacquiao gets BWAA award in NYC

Manny Pacquiao received the Boxing Writers Association of America (BWAA) Boxer of the Year award in New York, Los Angeles, according to a report by www.philboxing.com Saturday. Former middleweight champion Jake Lamotta, who pitched in for Joe Calzaghe of Great Britain, presented the trophy to Pacquiao, who is also in the United States to support his younger brother Bobby in his bout against Humberto Soto at the Madison Square Garden on Sunday. Calzaghe, the longest reigning boxing title holder in any division, failed to arrive to present the BWAA trophy to Pacquiao. Jake Lamotta, according to the report, is a Bronx, New York boxer who is known as the first to defeat Sugar Ray Robinson. The movie Raging Bull, directed by Martin Scorsese with Robert de Niro as the main actor, was based on Lamotta's life. BWAA picked Pacquiao as its 2006 Fighter of the Year due to his victories against Mexican legend Erik Morales in January and November last year both in Las Vegas. In between those fights, Pacquiao dominated another Mexican - Oscar Larios - in Manila. - GMANews.TV
